Early June's sad news of the passing of Mia Stone has hit those who were in her orbit both personally and from a fan perspective hard. For me, Mia was a singer and musician who I have looked up to as an inspiration for many decades, from being blown away by Stone Circus and then the discovery of The Pizza Sluts and then being able to witness Satellite in a live setting and on CD. I saw a show of hers in Prahran in the 90's which was SO incredibly mesmerising, powerful, spiritually uplifting and wild that it is etched in my memory as one of my fave shows of all time. She was also fortunate enough to have great players and people behind her so those who drummed and played guitars etc.. across her musical career should be celebrated boldly also. There was the many Janis Joplin comparisons, the raunch and sex of her dress and delivery and that soaring VOICE that could totally raise a roof, which came from deep within and had projection like no other singer I have witnessed since in a live setting. There has long been moves in the background for a FMR compilation of bands Mia has been involved with so hopefully one day, with all her friends and family on board this could be a thing.. I know that it would be a fitting tribute to an amazing singer and strong presence on the Australian Independent scene across multiple decades and may we at this time appreciate and admire both the woman she was and the music that she left in the world. There is one song that is available via this site of the mighty STONE CIRCUS on Vinyl, that being the killer cut 'Arnold's Day'  recorded on Aug 27th 1990 and released as part of Issue #5 of my then fanzine 'Resistant Harmony' in 1992. Only a few of the 7" remain after those 30+ years and it remains a fave of mine for sure. A raw, explosive talent with sass, power, and a unique ability to be able to send an audience into an almost trance like state. Wow ! what a dynamic musician Mia was and may we continue to celebrate, explore and enjoy the music that she and her awesome band members left us across that journey, from the inner city dark haunts to the Alpine region of North East Victoria. She's one of my music heroes and that is locked in for life ! I also take this time to mention the passing of HONEST JOHN PLAIN from THE BOYS who were the most recent FMR release ( Now Sold Out) A man who led a full and interesting life in music and deep friendships across countless decades and we celebrate his life here also.     Scotti FMR

V/A: Little Bands Melbourne 1979-1980 LP
Unique to Melbourne, the ‘Little Bands’ was a sub scene of the punk/post-punk underground world that came together for a brief period of time across a small number of supportive venues. This 20 track compilation captures a selection of Little Bands that were recorded live in 1980 by 3RRR champ Alan Bamford on a Sony Reel to Reel machine. Included is a detailed 8-page booklet with info/photos/interviews etc...along with a repro of a 4-page fanzine, ’The North Fitzroy Beat’.

The Little Bands scene was helmed by experimental, electronic pioneers, Primitive Calculators & Whirlywirld in 1979.

With band names like Too Fat to Fit Through the Door, Bags of Personality, Clang, Hoy Family Swingers, Morpions, Simplex, The Delicatessens, The Saxophone Caper and World of Sport, over 50 bands became a part of this Avant Garde and experimental musical scene.

As well as this vinyl album, there is also a link to an expanded digital offering via Bandcamp with over 2 additional hours of tracks to enjoy and explore.
(fantasticmessrecords.bandcamp.com). The FMR Bandcamp page has also been heavily updated with other label releases now up online.

Two initial colour editions are available, & a unique audio offering that has been a long time in the making. Mastered by Simon Grounds.

 (FMR 040)

Custom DIY ART BOXES
Across August, myself and a couple of close pals held an exhibition of Art in St.Kilda. These boxes of mine are a leftfield tribute to the 45rpm 7" single, in 8x10 wooden boxes with a glass window. They are DIY picture sleeves, with real repurposed records (that you cannot play) of bands and people that only exist IN MY HEAD ! Each one comes with a laminated 'history' of what it is and all are HAND NUMBERED OUT OF # 85.

Those that remain are listed here, first as a gallery and below as items available to purchase, ACROSS THREE PAGES All are $110.00 each, with a flat rate post of $20. They contain elements of Cut and Paste, Spray Paint, Stencil, Paint Pens and more with the outer wooden box also spray painted. It has been a fun trip and have a sticky and see if they strike a chord with you. All boxes will be wrapped up well and mailed in a sturdy box. At checkout, look for the shipping rate marked ART BOX. Thanks,  Scotti

Featured Below :   PLANT BASED UNDERPANTS  -  POISON BARROW  - CCTV POO

APALLING HANSON - CONCRETE HEAT  - ALBY MANGLED - TOILET DUTIES

HATED ON THE HWY  - ANCHOR FACTION  - GRAFT  - SPIRIT BUT NO SPINE

SONS OF SOUND SENSE - PISS MAKER - BARB WIRE FIRE  - AMAZING VAGRANTS

MAGGOTTY MOO & THE CRAWLIES - HUCKLE MY BUFF - RAT DISCO - MANBABIES

SHERIFF BLANDY & THE FILTHY CELLS OF HELL - DJ RECTAL

GRANT GALLOWS & THE AFRAID KNOTS - PIMP WHISKEN - BINGO BANGO

THEE TOUCHING CLOTH - BETTER LATE THAN NEVILLE

*The other 50 odd have sold out.  Some examples of the laminated spiels for the records go like this :

Plant Based Underpants - 'Eating The Front'
If you are an avid listener to local indie radio station 3YYY then you may of heard ETF on regular rotation as the singer's dad owns the station. Kinda quirky synth-wave with sax and 70's kids toy instruments to make for some light fun and audio addictiveness.
An album to follow soon.

The Amazing Vagrants - 'Coffee with Vanilla Syrup'
Pretty full on and wild HARDCORE PUNK which kills from the get-go and does not let up until a scream finishes Side B. Fast, abrasive and with lyrics from the street, it's a soundtrack to a world gone mad, a world gone bad and it wants it's fucking money back NOW !  Bruuutal.

Poison Barrow - 'Through My Heart'
Great debut single from Sydneysiders PB which is like dreamy high end psych pop with a real 60's garage feel. Upon seeing them live this influence is more evident as they rock the paisley shirts and have the odd moment of tambourine and there's a lot of shakin' going on. Dual gal/guy vocals and shining melody which sees a lot of audience swayin'

You get the idea huh... and remember..THIS IS AN ART PROJECT, they are ready to hang on your wall, but YOU CANNOT PLAY THE RECORD inside the box as they are repurposed records and heavily glued in to their picture sleeve...These only exist as a cosmetic piece.
Thanks to all those who rocked up to the gallery and shared the space with us.

It really is a cool single and if you missed it last time, here it is for you again.

The Preytells - The Lost (ish) Tapes 7” (Fantastic Mess Records)

FMR is operated out of Melbourne by Scotti Campbell, who worked at venerable retail institutions Au-Go-Go and Missing Link over the span of a couple of decades.
Founded in 2019, FMR now has 20+ releases under their belts, mostly seven inchers with an apparent focus on unearthing some of the lesser known (if not
downright forgotten) bands from the extremely fertile Australian Underground.
The Preytells formed in 1986, played with anyone and everyone who came through their home base of Adelaide and released one song on a compilation of local
bands in 1988. This recording here is from 1992, part of a six song session originally intended for release on the Greasy Pop Records. But the band played their final show
on February 21st 1993 and tragically, less than a month later singer Mick Reed would be dead. The tape then disappeared into the shed of one of the band members
mothers only to pop up almost 30years later sounding none the worse for wear.
There are four songs on this seven inch EP, two originals and two covers. It’s illustrative that the covers include ‘Are you gonna be there (At the Love-In) by the Chocolate
Watchband and an adrenalized take on ‘We’re pretty quick’ by Albuquerque’s The Chob. Thus it seems these four lads (five with the farfisa appearance) were digging deep.
The Preytells were also clearly influenced by the incredible musical environment into which they were born, and you can certainly hear the ghost of Radio Birdman.
Perhaps not surprisingly then, they were also mining a similar vein to their then contemporaries The Celibate Rifles. But what they added to their brew that was unique
was a little more hard lean towards 60’s psychedelia, as evidenced not only by their choice of covers, but also their own tunes. ‘Step Up’ is indeed a fine mid 80’s Aussie
underground take on 60’s garage psych as run through a Birdman filter. ‘Come My Way’ is a bit more straightforward garage-punk rock, working in a parallel lane to the
Rifles. This variety of Australian music still sounds good to me-it’s easy to imagine it playing at a beach party circa 1988-and the Preytells were obviously the genuine
article. The packaging here is excellent, seemingly a staple of FMR. In addition to a couple of coloured vinyl variants, there are also liner notes, lyrics, reproductions of gig
flyers and stickers. If you’re a fan of this period of the Oz underground and dig bands like the Eastern Dark and the aforementioned Celibate Rifles, you really can’t go
wrong here. If they’d come from Melbourne or Sydney you may well have heard of them already. As it is in 2023, I’m glad to of learned a little something of both the
Preytells and FMR. Nice work !    John Mulhouse - Ugly Things Fanzine

JUNE 18th Update : YELLOW COPIES NOW SOLD OUT !
PINK VINYL COPIES AVAILABLE NOW

Out now on FMR comes this killer 40th YEAR ANNIVERSARY reissue of this classic USA KBD sludge punk classic from 1983. Denver Colorado DIY punk gunk at it's finest which has given messed up sonic joy to many across the last 4 decades. Originally released on Local Anesthetic Records back in the day, this Aussie only edition features the mega title cut plus TWO PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS found on a Reel in 2021 (Rec at Hands On studio 26/3/83). Two cool as initial editions on YELLOW VINYL in Pro jacket sleeve with liner notes, lyrics,Sticker, photo and flyer repro's (shipping now) and PINK VINYL in Ltd SILK SCREEN SLEEVE by Too Far Gone w: slightly different inserts (Shipping June 14)
These are both Hand Numbered out of 160 copies
There was a CD comp that myself and a pal put out in 2005 which was later reissued on LP/CD with extra tracks by Jello Biafra on Alternative Tentacles (Still Avail via the AT site). That Aussie connection has lasted a few decades and the band are top notch peeps ! Davey the drummer of the FRANTIX, who I was putting this project together with (along with Bass champ Matt) passed away a few weeks back so this project is dedicated to him and all those around the band's sphere who are no longer with us. Members of the FRANTIX later wound up in the truly great Sub-Pop band THE FLUID, who remain one of my fave bands from the late 80's /early 90's USA Underground.
Enjoy this red hot record (Mastered by Mikey Young) and watch soon as we turn the focus back again to Oz and issue some choice ARCHIVAL and NEW 7"s from some more gnarly as bands. Cheers and thanks for being along for the ride,  Scotti FMR  June 2023

FMR Rarities page updated today also...
